Sweetie and her three kits (from the posts earlier this year, in June) have been coming to visit all summer and fall, but we don't see them as often. They remembered us though. The little one would still take a cracker from me and they felt pretty comfortable in our yard. We like it that way! And they seemed to really enjoy their snacks tonight

Stubby Update

I know I haven't been updating much, so just in case anyone is still interested, Stubby is still coming and has maintained her title as our resident raccoon. While others come as well, Stubby is the staple. We think a few of her grown kits are among the frequent visitors. Sometimes they are all in the yard at the same time and seem to get along and play together.

Tonight Stubby was sitting in the grass when I got home, and when she saw me in the kitchen, she headed straight for the door. She sends everyone her best wishes!

I was very happy to see the two kits this week, but I was thrilled last night when Sweetie came back with not just the two, but with four! The more the merrier. I sat with them and played and got to know them all. Several were already brave enough to take a cracker from me. Adorable overload! I love how they play, and they always seem to love the outdoor rug.

One was taunting me about destroying my plant, but he was bluffing.

I was beginning to worry that we wouldn't have any babies this year. Haven't seen Sweetie nearly as much as we did last year, but tonight... VIOLA!! Sweetie and two kits appear at the magic pots. Taking their ques from mom, they weren't afraid of us and enjoyed some laughs and good snacks. Are there more kits out there we haven't seen yet?? Guess we have to wait and see. But aren't these guys cute??!?!

Well, I just checked the archives, and this time last year we already had seen a group of kits. So far we haven't seen any. Stubby and two other coons, which we think are her kids, still come every night for snacks. One night they all came at the same time and got along, so we think they are related.

It's the time of year, and I hope Stubby isn't too old to have kits! Keep you eyes on the blog and hopefully there will be baby pictures soon!!

Hi Lenny! By the way, I gave Stubs an English muffin with some grape jelly (at your suggestion) and she loved it! :)

An Overdue Update

It's been a long time since I've posted anything, but in the winter it's all pretty status quo. Stubby comes almost every night. Like tonight, waiting by the door and knowing we will see her and fill her bowl. She is just the sweetest old coon. I hope she has a bunch of kits this year because we always have such a good time with her babies!!

She looks so mean when she crunches, but she is really the farthest thing from it!

Then she tells a joke and has a good laugh....

Trixie comes almost every night, but has been coming really really late (or really really early depending on your point of view) and we haven't seen her much lately. But as I was doing dishes tonight I saw her having a snack and thought I would add some treats. As usual she took as much as she could get in her mouth and hands!

One of Sweetie's kids has been coming almost every night. I guess it's time she got a name of her own. (Please send me your suggestions!) Not sure it it's a boy or girl. I'm guessing girl since the boys seem to go out and find their own territory and the girls are the only ones that come back year after year.

This little cutie apparently has been into some mischief and has a web or something on her face. Her version of trick or treating perhaps! She got some treats for it.

P.S. How do you get "sleep" out of a raccoons eye without losing your hand?

We got a little rain today, but that does not stop our little snacker! One of Sweetie's babies came to visit and her fur was all wet, however it didn't stop her appetite. She has a small wound on her right paw. I've seen similar before and they tend to heal very well. As for the sleep in her eyes, I want to wipe it away for her!

Last night Stubby back home. We found her napping on the rug right outside the door. She belongs here and she knows it.

One of the babies came for a snack while she was here, and she growled quite a bit, but I talked her down and put out plenty of crackers for them both to enjoy.

And I guess by that, I mean "I'm back" because they raccoons have been here all along, I have just been remiss in posting their photos. The last week or so it's been Sweetie and two babies, instead of four. Time for the other two to break away from mom and start exploring on their own I suppose. Stubby didn't come as often this summer as last, which kind of makes me sad. Don't know if it's because Sweetie and her kits were ruling the roost, or they found other cool places to hang out. Still hoping to see Stubs more in the future. But here is Sweetie and her two BIG babies from this evening - eating crackers off my knee and feet!

One baby was so hungry he was trying to nurse as Sweetie was urgently trying to get our attention to take the pressure off. Sometimes when we have friends come over, they hope to catch a sighting of one of the families. Tonight Sweetie and Stubby both obliged with perfect timing! Not too late, and within 20 minutes of each other. As our guests left for the night, we should have taken one last peek in the yard. When I did, I discovered Stubby and her kits all curled up in a comfy nap pile.

Stubby and the kits came a few minutes after Sweetie cleared out. These babies are getting so big! The little one had what I thought was the hiccups again. Then I heard the hairball "bleeech" sound. I hope this little one doesn't have a chronic esophageal issue. That's what I worry about at night. Medical issues of the raccoons that I could do nothing about... ;)

Two New Visitors!

Tonight I looked out and saw two new faces! Actually, they are probably not new and grew up in our yrrd eating out of the magic pots (as they looked awfully comfortable there). My guess is that they were two young males, short and sleek fur with round little faces. I didn't get any pictures tonight as I didn't want to startle them, but I was sure glad to see some new faces. A few summers ago I counted 21 different raccoons coming through our yard in one night, and this year I've only seen Sweetie & family, and Stubby & family. Welcome Boys! (I use the term "boys" loosely since I would have sworn up and down Stubby was a male. You sure can't tell from the faces or bodies, and I'm not lookin' where it counts!)

Sweetie brought her baby tonight - and it's so tiny and cute!!! I don't even think Stubby's were this small when she brought them for the first time. He/she was still kind of wobbly and uncordinated, but took to the crackers just like his mom. Take a look... This is the first night they were offered peanuts, and they didn't seem to be overly enthusiastic about them. Stubby still went for the crackers every time. I was glad to see they hadn't grown too much. Still little balls of puff. :)

Last night Stubby and the babies came back. I had been a little worried about them, so was very relieved to see them again! However it was at 3am, and I was already sound asleep after shooting a wedding for 13 hours, so I was too tired to take any pictures. I said hello to them, gave them a few crackers and went back to bed. Hopefully they will come back tonight!

I haven't seen Stubby and the babies since I got back. Hopefully they will return soon. Sweetie hasn't brought hers yet (and I'm pretty sure she has some) and I wish she would! I'll tell you what, that Sweetie is a ham and a half! She hangs out by our door looking in with her puppy dog eyes. She knows how to work it.

Today, I felt like she has been on graham cracker overload, so I looked through the cupboard to see if there was anything new. We had a jar of leftover peanuts, and gave those a try - she LOVED them! What's next? Crackerjacks??

Tonight is a very typical evening. Stubby showed up at sundown for a snack. Sweetie a few minutes later. Sweetie is not limping as much today, and that's great! However she isn't the sharpest tack in the drawer. But look at this face:

So, you say, you are disparaging Sweetie's intelligence...what gives?! Let me tell you. We have two separate feeding stations in the yard to avoid conflicts between the patrons. Everything was going swimmingly tonight, until for some reason, Sweetie took her cracker from me and walked right past her water bowl and over to Stubbys. They grunted at each, but neither pulled the trigger on an all out brawl. I coaxed Sweetie back to the door with more crackers.

The Down Side

Having an outdoor family raccoons is great, but the downside is that there is nothing you can do when they are hurt or injured (or stop coming all together and you don't know why). Sweetie came tonight and she is limping. It looks like one of her front legs is hurt. Not broken or bloody, which is a good sign. Perhaps it's just a muscle pull or a sprain. They have an amazing ability to heal, so please send her your good healin' vibes! (NOTE: on second look she does have a small wound on what would be her pointer finger)

First Baby Sighting of the Season!!!

Stubby has three adorable little kits!! Apparently we were wrong about her having them the other night, no way they are only a few days old. More like a few weeks. Tonight she brought them to our yard for the first time (that we know of) and they were here for a couple hours. Mostly they stayed in the pond area - the dark side of the yard so any kind of photos were impossible. I lured them over to the door area with some kitten food and was lucky enough to get a few shots through the glass. (Shooting through glass into the dark is a challenge to say the least, so in a few days when I can open the door without them freaking out better pictures will be on the way!) When they were playing in the yard I did sneak outside to get a few shots of them, and already Stubby must have let them know we were cool cause they just basically looked at me and kept on about their business. Stubby's babies are always the best. We are so happy to see them, and really looking forward to a summer of fun. :)

Ok, this is the theory. Stubby was very slow, sluggish and fat last night. When she choose to lay down and nap instead of going immediately for the crackers was a little odd. Tonight she was back to her usual energy and looks much lighter. I think she had her babies last night. I was kind of hoping she might have them in our yard, but no... she had them wherever she lives. I can't wait to see them!!

The Cracker Whores

So far this spring two things are clear. One: Stubby and Little One come to spend time in our yard every night. Two: They are extremely spoiled and love crackers! There is no shame in the begging that they silently do for the square little pieces of snack heaven.

Imagine you come downstairs and as you walk past the door, this is what you see:

Adorable no? And what does she want? Crackers! I do also think she would love to join our tribe of cats and come inside and be one of them, but for now - she will settle for square tasty goodness.

Stubby was the first visitor tonight, but shortly after her arrival, before she even wanted crackers, she needed a few zzzzz's.

They are often in the yard at the same time. Stubby does her share of growling, and they do tussle from time to time, but as long as the food is plentiful, they have a truce. (Stubby is on the left, Little one on the right)

Here is the other sweet little raccoon that comes every night. She REALLY likes graham crackers and will sit in the door for hours with a sad face until she gets some. We ran out a few nights ago so she has been enjoying Cheerios and Mighty Bits.

Stubby doesn't wait for the cover of night

The past few weeks we have two regular visitors who spend pretty much the whole night hanging out in our yard - eating and napping. Of course there is Stubby, who has been coming even before dark. She sits by the door and patiently waits for us to notice her. Later in the evening there is a sweet little thing, who I think is either one of Stubby's babies from last year, or one of Sweeties. She really likes to park herself on the mat by the door as well. I need to get some pictures of her....perhaps tonight.

NOTE: It's not still light enough out for me to get a good shot of her without the flash. If she moves at all, she gets blurry - which frustrates me, but have you ever been able to get a raccoon to sit still!?

Stubby - Our "Coon-Dog"

Stubby has been coming to our house for as long as we can remember (or started noticing the raccoons). There hasn't been too much activity lately, but nearly every night, just as it gets dark, Stubby is waiting by the door for the nightly snacks. She had six babies last year, the sweetest group yet. It looks like there may be more on the way. But either way, Stubby is always welcome and we have come to think of her as part of the family. We just don't let her in the house. ;)

Spring is Coming

It's been awhile since I've updated the blog, but not too much activity has been going on. There are still nightly visits various characters, Stubby, a couple of Stubby's babies that are all grown up, and a few other. Stubby still comes and sits looking right into door if there isn't any food out for her. Two nights ago she napped in the yard for a long time.

There have been a couple of badly injured raccoons that have come through. We had ALOT of rain a few weeks ago, which is rare for us, and it's been rough on my furry friends. I know they have a strong capacity to heal and hope that they do.

It's almost kit time again! Stubby is most definitely pregnant as is one of the other mothers I see frequently. I haven't seen Giggles mom in awhile, but if I was the betting kind I would put some money on her as well.

No pictures today, but will try and get some soon.

Thanks to Patto in Thailand for the nice comment today! It reminded me that a few people are out there reading and checking up on my raccoons. I can't leave you hanging. :)

I wouldn't have imagined this scenario would work out so well. These are a couple of Stubby's babies, so maybe it's because they are the coolest most laid back raccoons in the world, or maybe they always get along with possums. A few days before Christmas, we came home and peeked outside. To our surprise, the possum was eating out of one of the pots - and three raccoons were eating out of the other! No one seemed to mind the other, there was plenty for everyone. I couldn't get pictures because everytime I open the door the possum runs off. It's happened once more since then, so maybe someday I will capture it to share.

October was a rough month for me, two major losses in my life, so the raccoon fell to the wayside. But we have still been having visitors almost every night and they are quite the little piggies! Perhaps fattening up for winter? The other night my favorite family of all time came to visit and here are a few shots of them (Stubby's family):

It's getting to the point now where the babies are all grown up and starting to come on their own, or in smaller groups. It's hard for me to tell who is who anymore. I can tell when they know me, but I don't know exactly who they are. I still love 'em all just the same.

Last night I looked out and we had a BUNCH of raccoons out there. Hard for me to be sure who they all were. It looked like some of Stubby's kids, some of the Giggles Gang and the first mom from the summer - a weird combo! But they all seemed to get along. Mostly.

It's time to face a sad reality. I haven't seen Snapper for months. Odds are he did not run off to join the circus, or strike out on his own to form a rock band with the other rebels. But maybe it's just like Jessica Simpsons dog and a coyote "kidnapped" him. Should I put out some flyers?

Regardless, Sweetie and the remaining two kits came by last night for some party nosh and crackers.

When we have a bunch of coons standing on their hind leds peering in the back door odds are it's Stubby and crew. It happened tonight and it was not! Giggle's Mom and the gang were doing old "Hey Lady...You forgot to put our food out! Please feed me before I faint here on the spot" routine. So I did.

And it's been awhile since I've posted a video, so this occassion seemed right for one. It's a little dark at the beginning, but still so cute!

Crackers From Costco

The first time I bought 7 large boxes of cracker from Costco - with four regular boxes in side (7x4=28) back in April, I thought for sure it was enough to last all summer. I'm not almost out of the second round of that many crackers. These kids are hungry for crackers.

Stubby's family has been to visit a couple nights in a row. These pics are from last night. The before I decided to just enjoy them without flashing them.
